Albanian Sign Language (AlbSL) is one of the deaf sign languages of Europe, relatively well studied compared to most sign
languages. It is unrelated to other sign languages of the Balkans; the only commonality are signs derives from regional gestures
used by the hearing population. During the communist era, Albanian SL was strongly influenced by Albanian, with extensive
use of fingerspelling. After the collapse of communism, it was exposed to International Sign and other European sign languages,
resulting in a large number of loan words (Hoyer 2007). |
